Africa is the world’s second largest continent, both in terms of size and population. Its numerous regions are rich and diverse in culture and creativity, full of opportunities and challenges. The continent’s 54 countries stretch from the Mediterranean Sea to the South Atlantic Ocean, and from the Arabian Sea to the North Atlantic Ocean. Their history and demarcations are heavily characterized and influenced by European colonialism not yet fully recognized and understood, while the present day involves neo-colonial processes also requiring attention and research.
The launch of African-Architects.com kicks off from the West African harbor city of Lagos, Nigeria’s powerhouse and one of the largest cities on the continent. In the months and years to come, we aim to present the variety of Africa’s architectural and urban production on this platform — invitations for discovery and exchange. We hope to link these processes to the social and ecological responsibilities of architects, urban designers, and planners, as well as to current and ongoing debates of decolonial and feminist approaches in the field. We aim to collaborate with existing and new local networks in practice and academia. The undertaking is huge yet exciting, and we hope to have your understanding and support on this journey.
These are the invited and participating architects, urban designers, and planners:
Baron Architecture, CCP, FAA Designs, Fabulous Urban, MOE+ Architecture, Oshinowo Studio, PWDC, Ruban Office, SI.SA, Studio Contra, Studio Elementals, UCA, Spacefinish
