Period I, 1956-1990
Dr. Hayati Tabanlıoğlu accomplished major state buildings in Turkey. ( 1958-1970: Erzurum Atatürk University, 1956-1977: Atatürk Cultural Center, 1969-1984: Istanbul Atatürk Airport) In addition, the Turkish Embassy building in Brasilia, on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the supervision of the embassy building at Tokyo, built by Architect Kenzo Tange, were among the other jobs undertaken. Another important work of this period is the Ataköy Tourism Center project, which was started in 1981, was the first large-scale build, operate and transfer model of the Turkish state. Said complex contains the first modern, large covered shopping center Galleria, a 5-star hotel, apartment hotels, and a 1190-boat marina. The Galleria Shopping Center was awarded the ICSC European Design first prize in 1989.
Period II, 1990 - present
In 1990 Tabanlıoğlu Architects was established by Murat Tabanlıoğlu in collaboration with Dr. Hayati Tabanlıoğlu, Melkan Gürsel Tabanlıoğlu joined the group in 1995. Based in Istanbul with branches in Ankara, Dubai and Doha, office consists of more then 130 employees, operating in mainly Turkey, MENA and CIS Countries.
Searching for new efficiencies in terms of global and environmental needs and developments, Tabanlıoğlu works comprise wide range of building types from housing, offices, mix-used, public an cultural buildings and industrial projects to high-rises, such as Levent Loft & Loft Gardens and Kanyon, the tallest high-rise building of Istanbul, residential Sapphire Tower; contemporary urban complex Zorlu Center; a stimulating urban transformation project for Istanbul, Galataport; the first modern museum of Turkey, Istanbul Modern; Turkish Pavilion as one of the most outstanding examples of Expo 2000 in Hannover; Media Center for CNN Turk and Channel D, as well as several printing facilities and office buildings for Dogan Media Group such as DMC Ankara; office buildings such as ESAS Aeropark; Zorlu Levent; mix-use and residence projects in Moscow; mix-use complex in Kiev; Palace of Peace (with Foster and Partners), Expo Center, Astana Arena, Media Center and, Fitness Center, Abbaya Office Tower in Kazakhstan; Amman Officers Club Tower in Jordan; public projects like Tripoli Congress Center, Sirte Lounge in Libya, Sipopo Congress Center in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; high-rises in Dubai ; Hotel Rixos Libertas in Dubrovnik, Al-Fattan Crystal Towers in that is underconstruction; Hotel and summer resorts in the Aegean Coast of Turkey; innovative shopping mall projects E5, Marmara Forum and M1Meydan in Istanbul, Asmacatı in Balçova İzmir, Piazza in Samsun and other retail facilities in Turkey; industrial buildings like Tunacelik and Nova factories; and renovation projects such as Beyazıt Library from the 16th Century, the memorable Tarabya Hotel and Hayati Tabanlıoğlu’s Ataturk Cultural Center.
Tabanlıoğlu has been awarded the 1st prize in the competition for the Bodrum Airport International Terminal in 1998 and 4th place in the project competition for Dalaman Airport International Terminal in 1999.
In 2000, the European Convention selected Dogan Printing Center in Ankara as one of the four best steel constructions in Europe for Constructional Steelwork. Tabanlıoğlu awarded the second place at the competition for The Greater Metropolitan Municipal Building & City Hall for Ankara with Social- Commercial Facilities, Architecture, Engineering and Urban Design Competition Project. The architects have been awarded the first place in the Design Competition for the Municipality Building& City Hall of Istanbul, in 2001. In 2002, Media Town has received the Building Design Award of The Chamber of Architects of Turkey. Cityscape Architectural Review Awards Jury has granted the big awards in two different categories, ‘Transport Future’ and ‘Community Built’, for the two Tabanlıoğlu projects, respectively Galataport and Istanbul Modern Art Museum, in 2005; and in 2006 for Kanyon project in “Commercial Built ” category. Kanyon has also received ULI Award for Excellence, Europe. Doğan Media Center Ankara has been granted XI. National Architecture Award (2008) in Built category. Dogan Media Center Ankara has also been granted Commercial Built Award of the 2008 Cityscape Architectural Awards, together with Levent Loft in the Residential Built category and Zorlu Center in Master Planning category; Hotel Libertas Rixos, Dubrovnik received 2009 Cityscape Awards for Architecture in the Emerging Market in Tourism, Travel & Transport Built category; DMC Ankara 2009 selected for the IF Communication Design Award; Levent Loft and Zorlu Center are chosen as the best projects in their categories CNBC Arabia Europe & Africa Awards in 2009; Astana Areana in Kazakhistan is awarded at “2009Trimo Architectural Awards" as Efficient Design of the Facade Shell; MIPIM AR Future Project Awards jury selected Levent Loft II as Commended and Levent Loft is granted the Best Residential Built Development Award at Cityscape, Abu Dhabi –Real Estate, MENA 2010. Other awards in 2010 are Cityscape Awards for Architecture, Community Built Category: Tripoli Congress Center; International Property Awards International Architecture Award Winner- Public Sector: Tripoli Congress Center; MEA- Middle East Architect Award Architect of the Year: Melkan Gürsel – Murat Tabanlıoğlu; MEA- Institutional and Cultural Project of the Year: Tripoli Congress Center, Green Good Design Award : Zorlu Center (with EAA); Glass Leaf Awards - Astana Arena (finalist), METU- Middle East Technical University Student Center Building and Public Square Competition Project (2nd Prize). In 2011 International Architecture Award of Property Awards for Astana Arena in Public Sector; 2012 ICSC European Shopping Centre Award for Marmara Forum; WAF 2012 Transport Category Winner Bodrum International Airport; Cityscape Global 2012 Community & Culture Category Winner Astana Media Center. Project for the New National Stadium, Japan International Design Competition was short-listed in November 2012. Yenikapi Transfer Point and Archaeo Park Area project is the winner of Big Urban Projects at 2013 Mipim AR Future Project Awards. Loft Gardens and Bodrum International Airport projects received RIBA International Awards for "the excellent work being done by RIBA members around the world" in 2011 and 2013 respectively. Selçuk Ecza Headquaters project has recently received 2013 WAF Future Office Project Award. Besides several international and national prizes the office ranks 79th in “BD World Architecture” top 100 list of year 2009.
